This past weekend I decided to push through the bay in a 2010 SS Camaro on my birthday. Let’s just say the acceleration factor was, light speed stealthy. The challenge was to stay poised and to not give in to my desire, which was to push the pedal through the floor. I lost that challenge. My poise was held hostage by a propulsive yet focused alter ego, and extension of me. His name, JimiRedRacer.

Every thing about this visual speaks innovation, the balance of colors, the asymmeterical bold zip and the functionality of it all is brilliant. I was doing my thing you know servicing the eclectic Japanese and Jazz inspired enthusiasts in SF, and was awestruck by a sweet strong hold. The sound was Miss Debbie Neigher who struck the keys with lightning strength which, compelled me to buy her EP. I was slightly disappointed the track Advice and Evergreen wasn’t on the EP however that will be on upcoming debut. It is written for Miss Neigher to be in a Neighborhood near you!

Working Class Heroes ( A portrait of John Lennon)

No one ever really dies, especially pop legends. Twenty-five die hard John Lennon

fan’s were presented with a majestic opportunity. Each fan was studio recorded

singing along to Lennon’s solo album Plastic Ono band, released in 1970. It is

Candice Breitz’s mission to illustrate the relationship between celebrities and their

fans through this video installation, or as I call it the “karaoke cry recordings”. This

Lennon solo album covered vast ideologies and even personalized messages that

were embraced by the world.

The heart sung fans stayed in the studio for 39 minutes and 55 seconds and

performed till their eyes watered and throats parched. The array of facial

expressions were everything from sorrow and intense, to still and joyful. Of course

each fan had a different reaction, yet there was an abstract harmony between the

everyday working citizens. They sung the lyrics as if their life depended on it. At one

moment a gentleman with red hair wore a blind fold maybe to show the viewer he

was a bonafide fan who had the lyrics memorized verbatim. At this time the fans

were singing along to Lennon claiming he doesn’t believe in Jesus, Hitler, magic,

yoga, or elvis, he just believes in himself and Yoko. However the octaves increased

intensely when the 25 fan choir belted out “Momma don’t go, Daddy come home”. At

some point this song hits home across the globe. It could be felt by the son or

daughter who lives in a village, big city, small town, refuge camp, upper class,

middle class, and of course lower class. This project is a step towards healing by

celebrating a legend through faith inspired followers. It also is a visual reminder of

how we as people, either inadvertent or obviously adopt certain qualities and

likeness of pop stars. This is illustrated through Candice Breitz’s Working Class Hero

Music is the food of fashion: U-N-I – Hollywood Hiatus

I am an artist myself, therefore analyzing music and fashion is of my innate taste. Two years ago in Los Feliz I was able to see two protonic artist that make up one nucleus U-N-I, a rap force out of Inglewood CA . Emcee’s Thurzday and Y-O has come a long way and seemingly have a kung-fu grip on their evolving road to success. This funky fresh new music is a proud derivative of many influences from the past. I’d like to say D-Nice, Nice n Smooth, Lords of the Underground, the best old school Nintendo games, and last but not least the Fresh Prince of Bel-air have impacted the group tremendously. U-N-I raps about everything from trips to Hollywood down to old Nintendo cheat codes! Bottom line the group is quite seasoned and have been traveling bi-coastal for a few years now. Check the vid out, the fashion and lyrics are easy to the eye. The group will be performing at MIGHTY 119 Utah STREET in San Francisco on May 30th. Follow U-N-I on twitter

Japanese denim bathing?

Got jeans in your closet priced over 200$? Let me guess, you don’t have a clue how to retain the face value of your Japanese selvage denim? Or, maybe you do know washing your precious denim in the laundry is like:

Forfeiting in a championship game, it’s a no win.
Sending your denim to a slow death.
Turning yourself over to the police when your innocent.
Pushing your denim off the deep end to be robbed of it’s colors and drowned in sorrow.

Just in case you don’t know already, I’ve identified some fun methods that should preserve the style and character of your favorite jeans.

Denim bath (Fun weekend time)

Jump in the jacuzzi while the water is bubbling hot, no I’m kidding. While wearing your denim, soak in a bath full of warm water for 10 minutes. Drain the water away, squat down and squeeze the water out the fabric. If possible let the jeans dry and mold to your body. Alternatively take them off and hang dry.

I highly suggest you lay down a plastic bath mat on the floor before soaking, and this should be done preferably on a hot day.

Soaked up selvage..

Hand Wash (dry cleaning will still deprive some color in the denim)

Wear raw for as long as possible or until smell develops. First wash should be dry clean. Following washes: soak denim in water for 1 hour with special dark detergent (woolite black), rinse, roll dry in terry cloth, then hang dry.

From now on you can treat your denim with some love and respect! It’s all about the preservation and getting your moneys worth!

She writes 350,000 words per year!

Today was quite historic for me, I sat in the Morgan Auditorium waiting to hear the views of an iconic woman interviewed by The Great Gladys Palmer. I must admit before today I had no idea of the amazing writer who has written over 1.7 million words since 1988. This epic accomplishment comes from the phenomenal Britain born Suzy Menkes. For two decades now she’s held the title of fashion reporter and editor for the International Herald Tribune. Stemming from her life long commitment to journalism in 2005 The Queen of England named her OBE, and also holds the Legion d’ Honneur. This is one of the highest decorations France has to offer. When she first started her position at the IHT she commuted back and fourth from London to Paris, which was no easy task. This uphill battle of transportation only boosted her confidence and will to fulfill her vision as a journalist.

This up and close event allowed students from the Academy of Arts University to pick Menken’s brain. Ultimately she doesn’t tweet, nor blog, she looks for execution and originality in new fashion collections, and believes no one can clean up a dusty fashion house such as Karl Lagerfield. I’d say in a sense Menkes believes Lagerfield is a Fashion God and feels he has always stuck to the CoCo Chanel code of ethics. Honestly people in the know would have paid to hear what this legendary woman had to say if tickets were for sale. Hearing a women with a plethora of lifetime accomplishments sound so humble, to me, was absolutely refreshing. I was enlightened when she said ” I don’t predict the future, I’ve always had the ability to read the past.” She not only feels that fashion will never die, but also the history of fashion is a part of and continues to build our social fabric.
